Daniel and Sierra first met on February 11, 2012 in Newport Beach, California.

At the time, Sierra was living in Los Angeles and decided, on a whim, to take a surf lesson in Newport. Her instructor invited her and a friend to grab coffee afterward and casually mentioned, “My philosophy professor is coming too.”

That professor was Daniel.

Daniel rode his bike down to Alta Coffee that morning, completely unaware he was about to meet the person who would change everything.

There, sitting outside just steps from the ocean, they met for the first time.

Sierra remembers noticing Daniel’s big smile and magnetic energy immediately, but also the way he spoke: intelligent, thoughtful, and deeply curious about life.

Daniel noticed Sierra just as quickly, this radiant, unforgettable presence with a giant joyful smile, quick wit, and a wild, unmistakable energy. There was something about her that wasn’t just seen, it was felt.

Safe to say… the feeling was mutual.

Four weeks later, Sierra made a bold move. She found three jobs and moved herself steps from the ocean in Newport Beach, unknowingly just a five-minute walk from Daniel’s house.

Serendipity? Magic? Maybe both.

Their early relationship was fueled by spontaneity and very little sleep. Sierra would sneak through Daniel’s kitchen window before sunrise and whisper, “Surf’s up, let’s go,” and Daniel would somehow agree to this every time.

From there, it was nonstop.

That summer set the tone for the life they would continue building, saying yes to curiosity, discovery, and whatever the day might bring. They surfed, hiked, danced, rode around town on Sierra’s 50cc scooter, went skydiving, cliff jumping, white-water rafting, and made friends everywhere. They said yes to anything that sounded even remotely fun (or slightly questionable).

What started as a summer romance slowly turned into something much bigger.

Over the years their relationship evolved into a remarkable friendship. They hosted holidays together, organized group hikes and cabin trips, and built a community of friends wherever they went. Sierra loves bringing people together around food and celebration, and Daniel has always been the life of the party.

Through the years they traveled far and wide, exploring national parks, chasing waterfalls, soaking in hot springs, and sharing endless conversations about life and its meaning.

They’ve river-tubed in Belize, jumped into cenotes in the Dominican Republic, and slid down natural waterfalls in Puerto Rico. They’ve rafted waterfalls and mountain biked through New Zealand, backpacked the most difficult route to Machu Picchu without a guide, and via ferrata–climbed and zip-lined to an overnight glass pod on a cliff in Peru’s Sacred Valley. They’ve also backpacked the Kumano Kodo in Japan, and even crossed paths with a bear (which, thankfully, chose peace).

They said yes to life again and again.

And somehow, through all of it, the greatest constant wasn’t the thrill of the journey, it was how much they simply loved being together.

Over time they showed up for each other through life’s deeper moments too, standing beside each other’s families, supporting one another through difficult seasons, and building something rooted not just in excitement, but in care, trust, and presence.

Then, more than a decade after they first met, Daniel had a realization that felt both surprising and completely obvious:

Sierra wasn’t just his best friend. She was the one.

So Daniel did what any philosophy professor in love would do, he wrote her a heartfelt letter, putting into words what had been quietly building for years: that the love he had been searching for had been right beside him all along.

Sierra, being the thoughtful (and slightly cautious) one, took a beat. Their friendship meant everything, and risking it wasn’t a small thing.

But the more she reflected, the clearer it became:

They had already built something most people spend a lifetime trying to find.

A friendship full of loyalty, laughter, deep understanding, and a connection that never faded, no matter what life looked like.

And they genuinely just loved being together.

Daniel had always been the first person Sierra called with good news, bad news, or anything in between. They never ran out of things to say, places to explore, or reasons to laugh.

What they’ve found together is rare, a love that feels like friendship at its core, layered with deep respect, undeniable chemistry, and a deep sense of belonging.

After nearly fifteen years of knowing each other, through countless miles, experiences, and seasons of life, Daniel and Sierra are choosing each other now and always, fully, intentionally, and for life.

And yes... Sierra still occasionally tries to wake Daniel up for sunrise surf sessions.
